INDIES (Gb) has an interesting pedigree with unusual patterns of reinforcement.  His six-generation pedigree is low in female inbreeding.  In some respects, his is a throwback to the types of successful, selective matings of an earlier era – being yet another example of the well-known Bold Ruler/Princequillo nicks.  He is a member of female family #9-C and both parents are dual family qualifiers.  His matriline is one of first-class, racing performance.  First dam, CINNAMON SUGAR (IRE) is multiple G1-placed, G2 winner of $412,596.  Second dam, SUGAR AND SPICE is a G1 stakes winner of $257,046 and a multiple stakes producer with a demonstrated, blacktype affinity for Mr. Prospector.  Third dam, stakes-placed, Sweet Tooth, Broodmare-of-the-Year is the dam of champion 3YO filly, OUR MIMS G1, $368,034, SUGAR AND SPICE G1, $257,046 [above], and the great sire ALYDAR G1, $957,195.

INDIES (Gb) is free of Mr. Prospector/Raise A Native and Northern Dancer bloodlines, therefore is an ideal outcross for mares with such bloodlines.  Indeed, his bloodlines have already demonstrated an affinity for Raise A Native.  Indies has two strains of *Polynesian [through Alanesian and a daughter of Native Dancer, sire of Raise A Native.  His Polynesian strains manifest themselves primarily as female strains and are located on various maternal wings within the interior of Indies' pedigree.  They should be a sex-linked complement to any Mr. Prospector or Raise A Native strains carried by broodmares bred to Indies.

INDIES’ (Gb) pedigree is mostly heterozygous in profile through six-generations.  Outcrossing to broodmares carrying strains of Mr. Prospector or Raise A Native and strains of Northern Dancer has the downside of such resulting progeny also will be mostly heterozygous in profile.  This is the risk of additional dilution of prepotency due to lower opportunity for inbreeding-linkage between INDIES’ (Gb) pedigree and those of the mares to whom he might be bred.  In general, an absence of inbreeding reinforcement of prepotent individuals within six-generations tends to be a negative factor in selective mating for performance.

I strongly recommend selecting mares with Mr. Prospector, Raise A Native, and/or Northern Dancer bloodlines that also have hooks to some of the strong ancestors in INDIES' (Gb) pedigree within six-generations.  INDIES (Gb) has only four instances of opposite-sex inbreeding and his pedigree has excess male inbreeding.  Therefore, his pedigree is sex-unbalanced toward males [2.20 sire coancestry coefficient compared to 0.39 dam coancestry coefficient – coancestry values tending toward a one-to-one ratio [1:1] are "better"].

INDIES (Gb) matriline has previously strongly nicked with Tom Fool and Nashua [Real Delight],  It has nicked with male *Nasrullah descendants [Plum Cake], It seriously nicked with Raise A Native, *Herbager, and in INDIES' (Gb) pedigree, Key To The Mint [Sweet Tooth], male Turn-to  and Wild Again descendants [Sugar And Spice].  A slight negative, Sugar And Spice, INDIES' (Gb) second dam, failed to nick with Seattle Slew, a cross partially repeated in the mating that produced INDIES (Gb) 2001.  The mating of Wild Again to Sugar And Spice produced a multiple G1-placed, G2 stakes winner of $412,596, but as a broodmare she has produced so far nothing of exceptional merit.  A.P. Indy, already a producer of first class merit, has a strong chance of having the prepotency to be a sire-of-sires.  Unfortunately, INDIES (Gb) (GB) 2001 was never able to demonstrate running superiority.  Seattle Slew seems (especially at the level of regional-quality stallions) to throw far too much stamina and little speed in many of his descendants.  One exception was the sire, Eteelya 1987, by Seattle Slew x Had To Buy, by Sadiar.  If anything, Eteelya has even less inbreeding than INDIES (Gb).  Obviously INDIES (Gb) has a classic pedigree as does A.P. Indy.  A.P. Indy has not yet conclusively demonstrated a nicking profile among his descendants other than an affinity for sires such as Mr. Prospector, Raise A Native, and Northern Dancer carrying the Fitz James / Lady Fitz James genetic marker.

Mares with female Polynesian, male and female Native Dancer, Raise A Native Mr. Prospector are especially suitable for INDIES (Gb).

INDIES (Gb) should cross with broodmares having female Hail To Reason, Turn-to
War Admiral, War Relic, Man O'War, male or female Knight's Daughter, female Round Table
male and female La Troienne.

INDIES (Gb) should also cross with broodmares having Nearco/Hyperion bloodlines, female Nearco strains are especially desirable.

INDIES (Gb) should like broodmares with Bull Dog, Bull Lea and Blue Larkspur in their pedigrees.

Other bloodlines for INDIES (Gb) include any Missy Baba -  Raja Baba, etc., for example, Lazy Lode (Arg) has Missy Baba and ==>Nashua<==.

INDIES (Gb) is an example of the well-known, typical Bold Ruler - Princequillo nick.  The twin *Nasrullah forces of Bold Ruler and Nashua [as found in INDIES' (Gb) pedigree] were dominant in past years in North America.

Bold Ruler progeny rather quickly and successfully adapted to American-style running and to the North American breeding population.  Nashua’s progeny, however, were characterized by strong stamina influences and seemed, at first, to be not as dominant.  However in the lone run, Nashua has proved to have become a more durable, more prepotent ancestral influence in modern American pedigrees than Bold Ruler.

Breeders are strongly encouraged to consider INDIES (Gb) for broodmares having one or more strains of Nashua in their pedigrees. Nashua remains one of the great American stamina influences in modern, North American pedigrees.  Even though Nashua disappointed in establishing a tail-male patriline, he has become a significant trigger for the expression of performance traits in pedigrees when doubled.  Nashua also seems to have an affinity for Missy Baba as well.
